On 20 July, 1903, Ilinden or St. Elijah's day, the Bulgarian population of Macedonian and Thracian lands mounted an uprising against the Ottoman Empire. It is led by the VMRO - Internal Macedonian and Hadrianopolian Revolutionary Organization. The 26 000 poorly armed rebels from Bitola, Ohrid, Struga, Prespa, Prilep and other regions, yielded to the enormous enemy army of the Ottoman Empire. The uprising ended in atrocities, with 4690 killed, mainly old people, women and children, and over 12 000 houses torched. More than 30 000 sought refuge in Bulgaria, finding not only sanctuary and sustenance there, but also pride in their Bulgarian culture, language and ethnicity.
